Are you thinking of taking a vacation down in Salt Lake City, but in a seriously tight budget? If so, here are some of my top 10 free things you can do with your family or friends in Salt Lake City:
1. Visit Temple Square
Salt Lake City is called Mormon state for a reason. With its numerous temples, this major temple is one that you can’t miss. What’s even more fascinating is you can actually do a free tour along with visiting their free organ/orchestra concert (held at The Tabernacle).
2. Explore Sculpture Garden
This quirky, yet small garden is one not to be missed. This hidden garden, identified as “a visionary art environment,” contains 12 original sculptures and over 70 stones engraved with scriptures, poems, and literary texts.
3. Take a tour of the Capitol Hill
Sitting on top of the hill overlooking Salt Lake City is the Capitol Hill building, home to chambers and offices of the state government. But did you know that you can tour the Capitol Hill for free? If you want more information, click on this link.
I even recommend visiting the Utah Office of Tourism across the street if you’re looking for things to do in Utah. Plus, they have discounted brochures in the hallway, each varying by season.
4. Visit Liberty Park
One of the largest parks in Salt Lake, this prominent park is one of the oldest and a favorite among locals. Why you ask? As its name implies, Liberty Park is a place where all people are invited to enjoy the freedom and beauty of nature in a historical and grand setting.
If you have kids and are still not convinced, I highly recommend checking out their bird zoo, Tracy Aviary. This is one where your kids will have tons of fun finding rare exotic birds.
For a really good deal, I highly suggest visiting on a Wednesday (during the winter months) since it’s only a $1 admission per person. Or if you visit during the summer, visit Mondays after 5pm for a $5 admission fee.
5. Take the UTA Around Downtown Salt Lake
This is one of my favorite and I’ve taken advantage of the free public transportations during my stay. Just make sure to stay in the free-fare zones.
6. HIKE! HIKE! HIKE!
Close to beautiful, lush-green mountains and canyons, Salt Lake City offers many different hiking trails, each ranging from easy to hard. But don’t know where to start? Then check out my top 5 hiking spots in Salt Lake City.
7. Visit the Pioneer Memorial Museum
Want to journey back into the good ol’ pioneer days? Then visiting the Pioneer Museum is one of the places I highly recommend. This four-story building contains well-preserved displays, artifacts and relics of its pioneer ancestors journeying from Nauvoo, Illinois to the promised land in the west.
8. Visit Wheeler Historic Farm
This unique and historic 75-acre park/farm lets you and your family/friends get close to the farm animals, walk around the nature path, and explore the farmgrounds for FREE! Unfortunately, the more fun activities (i.e. cow milking) require paying a small fee, but it’s absolutely WORTH IT!!!
9. ZAP Free Admission Days
Here are some of the main attractions that offer free admission days:
- Hogle Zoo
- Tracy Aviary
- Loveland Aquarium
- Red Butte Garden
- Natural History Museum of Utah
- Discovery Gateway
Dates are subject to change, so check with the attractions for more details!
10. FREE OUTDOOR MOVIES!!!!
This is a no-brainer. During the summer months, Salt Lake City offers free outdoor movies each varying in location. So grab a blanket, chairs, and food and watch the movies under the starry night sky. Just make sure to check the website for more information.
